REGISTERED BREEDER OF PUREBRED ALASKAN MALAMUTES
The Alaskan Malamute, one of the oldest Arctic sled dogs, was named after the native Inuit tribe called Mahlemuts (now spelled Malamute) who settled along the shores of
Kotzebue Sound in the upper
western regions of Alaska. Written accounts of Alaska from various explorers and travellers rarely mention the Mahlemut people without reference to their dogs which were of the spitz-type described as being powerful looking and of remarkable endurance and fortitude. These dogs were used primarily as draught animals to haul heavy sleds, but were also used to pack supplies, for hunting seals and in packs
to track polar bears. Early writings indicate that the dogs kept by the Mahlemut people were better cared for than was usual for Arctic sled
dogs, and this seemingly accounts for the breed’s affectionate disposition.
Shelaskan Kennels was established in 1989 when we purchased our first Alaskan Malamute, from there we grew as did the love for this wonderful breed. Over the years we have produced both Canadian and American Champions as well as loving family companions. Alaskan Malamutes are not the dog for everyone, they are a strong willed and independent, like to dig up the yard, howl at the moon and shed a lot of fur. For your convenience we have added a number of information pages, click on the page and you will go there automatically. AN INTRODUCTION to the Alaskan Malamute, FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS and also QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF to help you decide if an Alaskan Malamute would be the best choice for your lifestyle and family. If you can't find the information that you are looking for, we would be happy to answer any questions or concerns that you may have. We do genetic screening for Hips, Eyes, and CHD on all our breeding dogs before they are entered into a breeding program to ensure our puppies get the best possible start. We breed for quality NOT quantity!! We work to provide for our dogs., we do not breed our dogs to provide for us!! Therefore we only have a couple of litters a year. We do not breed to fill orders, or specific coat colour, we are usually looking to add something to our kennel when we select our breedings. Visits to our kennel are by appointment, if you would like to visit please feel free to contact us.
There is no such thing as a Giant Alaskan Malamute., these are malamutes bred oversize and usually come with over sized health issues. Contrary to some advertisers Red Malamutes and White Malamutes are not RARE and are in our breed standard.
